The Gallery had in fact become one of the major tourist attractions of Venice, visited, among others, by Antonio Canova, Lord Byron, John Ruskin and Edouard Manet. Palazzo Manfrin, purchased in 1788 by Count Girolamo Manfrin, a wealthy tobacco merchant, who had transformed the first floor of the building into an art gallery, was considered for its collection of paintings, but also of sculptures, books and prints, a sort of “completion of the Venetian painting heritage exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts”. Yaw Owusu is a young emerging artist who, like El Anatsui, reconstitutes upcycled materials including coins to create rich, shimmering abstractions. Isshaq Ismail’s playful and dynamic portraits have established him as one of the most sought-after artists to emerge from the recent surge of interest in contemporary African art. El Anatsui has emerged as the foremost contemporary sculptor from the African continent.

These artists have each established their own distinctive visual languages, existing well beyond the recent focus upon West African portraiture. Material Earth showcases the work of three pioneering Ghanaian artists: El Anatsui, Yaw Owusu and Isshaq Ismail. Inaugurated in 2021 and based in Dubai, Efie Gallery’s programme focuses on West African art with an emphasis on Ghana. From 28 April until 13 May, Christie’s will present Material Earth, an exhibition in collaboration with Efie Gallery.
